About the Writer / My Testimony
During my years up to graduating from high school, you would see me at church every Sunday. However, once off to college, the church became a distant memory. Pursuing a very rewarding career with IBM, the world’s values meant everything and God became a distant memory. In 1986 IBM moved me into a high level position (six figures of course) in Washington D.C. Along with that came the very nice home, a new BMW and all the latest in electronics. Yes indeed, I was experiencing what we sadly call the American dream.
Six months into that job I developed this sense of, “there has to be more to life than this.” Thing were going well, yet this nagging sense would not go away. At the time, there was no clue where this was coming from. One Sunday morning I turned on the TV and there was a minister preaching and his message shot right into my heart, and now I really began to question the path I was taking. The following morning a friend at work suggested someone to cut my hair. Normally this was done near my home, but this day it needed to be done quickly. He told me of a woman he went to just two blocks from the office.
She was able to see me that afternoon. After perhaps five minutes of chit-chat while she cut, there was a period of silence, but not an uncomfortable one. Then she said to me, “You are looking for Jesus aren’t you?” To say her question rocked me is an understatement. How did she know? Without hesitation I told her, “yes.” She then very politely demanded I go into a bookstore two doors down and buy a Bible, which I did.
After one month my plans totally changed when submitting a request to be transferred to the sales office in my hometown and informing them there was no more interest in climbing the corporate ladder. In March of 1987 the transfer was completed with a sigh of relief on my part. Yes, that was a giant step, but like the prodigal son, it was just the decision to go home and there draw closer to my Father. A rugged trip still lie ahead. The weeds of the world still remained, and it took another seven years before my journey home was completed, when my Father hugged me and took me in as I said the sinner’s prayer and asked Jesus to come into my heart and committed myself to serving him. The key was returning to a church in 1992, reading the Bible, which began convicting me and removing the weeds of the world that remained. The Bible illuminated what was truly important in this world, the purpose of my life and how I should be living my life in the future.
For the following ten years, teaching two Sunday school classes per week became a huge part of my life. Looking back, probably two hours per day, every day, for ten years were spent studying. This occurred out of hunger, not obligation. It totally changed my life in miraculous ways. God had given me a gift and out of obedience I used it. It was and continues to be the most rewarding part of my life. There were none of the many accomplishments at IBM that ever came close to the joy of teaching God’s Word
